Textile Collages
I start each piece by first choosing interesting patterns cut into random shapes, and then, like puzzle pieces, I create a composition by layering shapes, varying the size and scale. I am essentially painting with fabric and thread. The pieced work is then layered and quilted to add dimension, and then finally framed and matted (not shown).
Some of the collages are part of a thematic group, for example the Growing In Rasnov tree series. In this series, the tree represents the growing element of life. The tree emerges from the foreground and rests against a background which set the tone or atmosphere of the composition. The balance of these simple images creates a landscape that emanates with rhythm and energy.
